Less Vacation than a Medieval Peasant?

We were shocked by this article on Reuters about why a medieval peasant had many more days off work a year (around 215) than the modern American worker does today (around 8!)

As we here at Reboot Partners are well aware, taking time off is key to both an individual and a company’s health and well-being.  As the author Lynn Parramore asserts:

Ironically, this cult of endless toil doesn’t really help the bottom line. Study after study shows that overworking reduces productivity. On the other hand, performance increases after a vacation, and workers come back with restored energy and focus. The longer the vacation, the more relaxed and energized people feel upon returning to the office.

Reboot Partner Nancy Bearg is featured in her alma mater Willamette University’s special feature The Expert in the Room.

The article follows Nancy’s trailblazing career in National Security from being the first female professional staff member for the Senate Committee on Armed Services to Vice President George H.W. Bush’s assistant for national security affairs, the first woman to hold that position to her current work as a national expert in conflict prevention and post-conflict peacebuilding.  Her work with Reboot Partners and our upcoming book on baby boomers and retirement is also featured.

Reboot Partner Rita Foley is quoted about first meeting Nancy: “When she introduced herself, I thought ‘Whoa, look at this woman I’m next to. She’s so unbelievably accomplished, but so very modest.’”
