 As New York City temperatures dropped to 1 degree, a group of hearty explorers were gathered in a warm place for each to plan for the next chapter of their life.

Over a weekend, they talked about their dreams, overcoming obstacles, how to reinvent themselves into something new professionally, and how to pursue personal passions. More time playing piano. Moving to a new city. Combining a fitness routine with volunteering and community service. Stepping in to untangle corporate and other institutional situations. Redefining priorities. How to share life experiences and ideas more broadly.

NYC Retreat RitaWhat an interesting group of men and women! They were diverse in age and background, energized, and wise. Everyone learned so much from each other and offered such great ideas.

The food was delicious homemade gourmet, from Moroccan tagine and eggplant to vegetable lasagna to shepherd’s pie. The views of Central Park were breathtaking, especially when it snowed.

Each of our Reboot Your Life retreats is different. We love doing it and seeing the results as the participants figure out how to shape their futures.

Cape Cod Reboot Your Life Retreat 2014 – “What’s Next?”

Wow, what a great group of attendees for the October retreat held at Cathy Allen’s house in Cape Cod!  The diversity in backgrounds and ages made it such a rich experience for us all.  The Skills Assessment Exercise went way over time because the advice from the participants to each other was so amazing and insightful.  We just sat back and watched!  Well, we did do a little more than that, but it was so fulfilling to see people bond and support each other is such a spectacular way.  They have organized a reunion for themselves to reconnect next year to stomp grapes and drink wine at one of the attendee’s family vineyard in Willamette Valley, Oregon!

The theme was consistent in answering the question, “what’s next?”…whether it was getting back into the corporate world, taking a long needed sabbatical, reinventing oneself from a medical career, getting onto corporate boards, or deciding now was the time to leave a position.

We dined on the seafood from the region, took walks on the beach to vision the next step, explored the shopping in Chatham, and laughed at the differences in generational approaches to communications and vocabulary.  Who knew that “to goose someone” is to motivate them to take action in their lives?

Cape weather was beautiful two of the days, then rain for another, but we didn’t mind. The setting, the company, the food, the thoughtfulness and generosity of those attending, kept us all warm.

Revolutionary Retirement High Res Book CoverWe were also able to integrate many of the new exercises and concepts from our new book, Revolutionary Retirement: What’s Next for YOU? into the Retreat.  The book just came out this week and is available on www.amazon.com.  It will soon be available in bookstores and other outlets. The Sag Harbor Reboot Your Life Retreat 2014 – Moving Forward

Walking on the beach? Sitting in the sand? Is this a Reboot Your Life retreat where people are hard at work on figuring out the next chapter of their lives?

Yes, it is! After getting to know each other Friday evening and doing the first part of the personal roadmap-building, we headed to a picturesque Sag Harbor cove for a walking meditation – a visualization of how we want our lives to look in a year. Everyone walked where they wanted and visualized their future, then sat in the sand to write it down. The beauty and serenity were assets.

The participants in this Reboot Your Life Retreat in Sag Harbor came together across generations to share a common purpose — to uncover what’s next for them. They ranged in age from 35-65, yet broke down barriers of age and career to created a supporting and nurturing environment from which to grow and explore possibilities.  Everyone commented that although there were people already on a Reboot Break – planned and unplanned – another preparing for retirement, and another planning what to do instead of retirement,  and no one felt out of place or unsupported.

And it was fun! What a great time of year and a great location at Jaye’s comfortable house in Sag Harbor. We had good food and fellowship – and hard work, as everyone asked themselves questions and charted their course forward. Everyone supported each other with ideas and reinforcement during the retreat and their contact since then indicates a continued community of support.

All the participants left with a clearer idea of their next chapter and what needs to be thought through and done to get there. We ended with a powerful skills assessment that was validating, motivating, and inspiring.  Some had never gotten such good feedback about what they bring to their lives and their future.  A greater ease was felt by all about the task of planning their next chapter, as each had started a roadmap.

We facilitators never cease to be amazed and pleased by the transformations that take place. We have one more retreat in 2014 – October 10-12 in Cape Cod – and four retreats planned for 2015. 2015?! Make it the year you move forward in designing and planning your life!

June Newsletter – Small Risks

It’s finally summer!  The time of travel, expansion, growth, and experimentation.  Longer days offer more hours in the day for you…and extra time to start trying new things.

Sometimes getting out of your comfort zone can be frightening.  With that in mind, one of the most successful exercises we do at our Reboot Your Life workshops and retreats is called “Five Small Risks.”  It’s a way to challenge yourself in a non-stressful way.  Making change in your life doesn’t necessarily require a whole overhaul of your job and relationships – the beginning stirrings of change just require that you take a few manageable risks that bring in new interest and energy.  What we’ve seen is that other new ideas almost always immediately follow from these small, purposeful actions.

FIVE SMALL RISKS

  • Decide 5 New Foods You Will Try in a Restaurant or Cook at Home 
  • Go to 5 Movies You Might Never Have Considered 
  • Take 5 Different Routes to a Destination and Explore the Areas 
  • Try 5 New Forms of Exercise or Movement 
  • Plan 5 Different Exploratory Weekend Trips 
  • Call 5 New/Old Friends and Plan Something with Them 
  • Make up Your Own 5 Things….. 

Pick one category and do one of the five things each month until you have done them all.  Schedule it into your calendar.

Take2LeezaWe were excited to hear about a new book by TV personality Leeza Gibbons all about re-starting your life at any age.

As described by Amazon.com, Take 2: Your Guide to Creating Happy Endings and New Beginnings “is a book about rebooting your life at any point. It’s about starting over; taking inventory; and getting smarter, stronger, and sexier with no apologies, no regrets, and no turning back.” In the book, Leeza gives simple tips on how to start focusing on your own path right now – like “Pay Attention to How You Feel” and “No, No, a Thousand Times No!” – similar to tips we give in our own book.
