Reboot Your Life on CNBC Guest Blog

Charles Scott, a fellow speaker at October’s Meet Plan Go! event in NYC, mentions Reboot Your Life on the latest CNBC Guest Blog:

“I told the audience about enlightened employers like Intel Corporation where I worked for fourteen years, that provide full-time employees a paid two-month sabbatical every seven years. One of my fellow speakers, Rita Foley, co-author of Reboot Your Life, conducted interviews with hundreds of people who had taken a career break to travel. She said that, “We could not find a single person who had regretted the decision.”

Charles Scott is an endurance athlete and family adventurer. He spent 14 years working at Intel Corporation before deciding to focus his energy full-time on writing, speaking and doing endurance challenges with his family linked to environmental causes. In the summer of 2009, he and his eight-year old son Sho rode connected bicycles the length of mainland Japan, covering 2,500 miles in 67 days. They were named “Climate Heroes” by the United Nations as they raised money for a global tree planting campaign. And in the summer of 2011, he cycled 1,500 miles around Iceland on connected bicycles with his ten-year old son and four-year old daughter, once again sponsored by the UN as “Climate Heroes”: Charles is writing a book about the Japan ride called Rising Son.  He is an inspiration for Reboot-ers everywhere!

Reboot Your Life and Meet, Plan, Go!

On October 18th co-authors Nancy Bearg and Rita Foley had the good fortune to be invited to participate in a national Meet, Plan, Go! event – 17 simultaneous meetings in 17 cities across the United states. Rita was on the panel in New York City while Nancy was on the one in Washington D.C.

Rita says about the experience:

“In preparation for the event I  loved getting to know my fellow panelists, they are young adventurers and very awe inspiring indeed. Rainer Jenss, the host of our meeting, traveled around the world for a year with his wife and two young children. To open the meeting he created a slide show and points on why travel is one of the best ways to educate and give the gift of life experience to young children. We will all benefit from his knowledge, experience, and passion soon as he is about to launch a new business venture which will be focused on traveling with children.

Lisa Sciambra comes from a traditional italian family and when she, as the first child, announced that she was getting married she was expected to immediately start planning a big wedding and settle down. Instead she and her fiancé, now husband, informed their families that they were quitting work to travel around the world for a year.  Amanda Pressner and two best friends quit their highly coveted jobs in publishing and media to also travel around the world for a year. I am in the process of reading their travel memoir, The Lost Girls. From what I’ve read so far, it’s fun and very well written, more to come. And last but not where least, Charles Scott took his first sabbatical when he worked for Intel. He and his eight year old son biked from top to bottom of Japan. This past year, he quit his job and has recently returned from his second sabbatical riding all around Iceland, this time with his now ten year old son and four year old daughter. Stay tuned, as he is writing two books about his travel adventures that are sure to be wonderful.

Was I inspired? Heck yes. These are four individuals and couples who in their late 20’s and early 30’s took risks, quit their jobs, fought against the naysayers and followed their hearts and their dreams. Each one has returned to work they love and just like all the people we interviewed for Reboot Your Life, they returned happier and more fulfilled than ever.  One of the founders of Meet, Plan, Go! Michaela Potter was also present in our NYC event. Hats off to her and her partners for creating this movement for the adventure minded to share knowledge and experience about travel sabbaticals.”
