An incredible Family Sabbatical Story!

We were excited and inspired by this story on Daily Mail about a Floridian family who sold their house and everything they owned to take a 13 month sabbatical together, visiting all 50 states in the union!  Parents Heidi and Randy took sabbaticals from their jobs and pulled their kids out of school for this once in a lifetime adventure:

“It really was the trip of a lifetime. We didn’t want our kids to learn about America through text books, we wanted them to experience it.”

The Martin family planned for three years beforehand for their sabbatical – the kind of intense planning process we Reboot Partners suggest for getting the most out of your time off.

Family Sabbaticals – How to Do It

We were thrilled to find this inspiring and informative article about the meaningful benefits of taking a sabbatical with your family and how to do it by Chris Taylor, Reuters.  Taylor tells the story of many parents who are saving up for years to take a mid-life sabbatical – or a “mini-retirement,”with their children, using the kind of thorough planning we recommend in our book.

The article also confirms what we know about the more and more Companies Who Get It:

Sixteen percent of employers now offer unpaid sabbaticals, up from 12 percent in 2009, according to the Society for Human Resource Management’s 2013 Employee Benefits Survey. Another 4 percent even offer fully paid sabbaticals as a juicy perk.

July Newsletter – Volunteering Sabbaticals at the Folk Art Market

We often write and talk about the people we have interviewed for our book, Reboot Your Life, or who have attended our Reboot Your Life Retreats, taking what we call “Volunteering Sabbaticals.”  Many used their sabbaticals to get involved in nonprofits, to travel on social-giving vacations, or to give back in their local communities.  For example, Betsy, an orthopedic surgeon, spent part of her Reboot Break on a month-long medical volunteer project.  She said, “The work of this trip was the reason I went into medicine.”  Our newest book research on the Baby Boomers echoes that sentiment.  Whether it is the Millennials or the Boomers, people are interested in finding ways to help others by donating time or money. Giving back is a national pastime!

One of the ways we Reboot Partners love to give back is through the Santa Fe International Folk Market (www.folkartmarket.org).  Held the second weekend in July in Santa Fe, New Mexico, it is an amazing event.  Over 150 folk artists from over 60 countries submit their folk art to a jury of experts to be invited to participate in this three-day Market.   The artists take home 90% of their sales to support their families and communities, as well as learning to sell to collectors, museum buyers, retailers, wholesalers, and people who just love their handcrafts.  The Market supports the ability of the artists to maintain and preserve the traditional arts of their culture and country, while enabling them to share their work with the world.

Three years ago, with a small grant, we Reboot Partners along with several other friends created the Mentor to Market program to help educate and train the artists in marketing, retailing, pricing, social media, and other skills to help them become sustainable in their arts.

This year, Catherine Allen is piloting a new hands-on sales coach effort for the artists – Rita Foley is one of the official photographers, and Nancy Bearg and Jaye Smith are mentoring artists from South Africa, Afghanistan, and Cuba.  The Honorable Melanne Verveer, former Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues at the US State Department, will be speaking to the artists and volunteers about the new Alliance for Artisan Enterprise program she started with Secretary Hillary Clinton.

We are thrilled that a number of Reboot Your Life Retreat attendees are joining the over 1500 volunteers this year who make the market possible by helping with everything from putting up booths to counting money to assisting the artists.  Come join us this year or next, and use your time off from work to give back to these extraordinary artists!  Or look for an opportunity near you!

June Newsletter – Summer Reboot Vacations and Explorations

SagHarborbeach

Summer is here!  And with it, hopefully you have exciting plans for summer vacation.  It’s a wonderful time for everyone to refresh and reboot.  It’s also a great time to try out ideas of activities you would enjoy, new pursuits, and possibly a different place you’d like to live in retirement.

A caution, though: if you’re not careful, vacations can be just as stressful as “regular life”!  Here are some important tips to make sure that you use your vacation time to fully “reboot”:

  • Detach completely from technology.  Turning away from technology and the media helps us empty our minds of the constant chatter, and allows us to find a deeper stream of ideas, insights, and recognition
  • Travel somewhere to explore.  It might be a place in which you would eventually want to live or do some volunteering.  If you’re staying home this summer, take some day trips
  • When you’re on vacation, journal everyday and keep postcards, thoughts, quotes, and photos all in the journal to capture the experience.  This can be especially helpful if you are contemplating retirement
  • Whether you’re traveling or staying at home, try something new – movie, sport, museum, or activity like biking, etc.
  • Come home early enough from any trip to have a weekend to recoup, get organized, do laundry, relax and go to back work relaxed

With a little focus and attention, you can make any bit of summer vacation into your own mini Reboot Break.  And if you need some help and guidance in your Reboot plans, check out the retreats Reboot Partners are offering this summer and fall.

Reboot Recommends: Forbes/Quora Sabbatical Article

Check out this Quora article on Forbes’ website: If You Were to Take a Year-Long Sabbatical, How Would You Spend it to Enhance Your Career?

We here at Reboot agree exactly with what the paradox the author articulates: Sabbaticals are about “unstructured time exploring without specific goals in mind. “But (this is the paradox) this is often exactly what you need to improve your career.”
