Reboot Recommends – Tales from a Family Adventurer

Author and Family Adventurer Charles R. Scott was an Intel executive who took two sabbaticals. The first time he went back to Intel, and the second time he left to become a writer and is now a public speaker on sabbaticals with kids.

imagesHe is the author of the recent book Rising Son: A Father and Son’s Bike Adventure across Japan.  In the book and in his talks, he shares entertaining and sometimes harrowing stories from the adventurous family endurance challenges he has taken with his two young children across Japan, Iceland, and Western Europe.  He offers encouragement and tools to the audience to come up with their own adventures, unshackle themselves from sedentary living, too much stress, self-imposed limits, and anything else that gets in the way of pursuing a healthy, meaningful life.

Reboot Recommends: Mandalas

Our Reboot Your Life Social Network maven Rachel Patterson found an inspiration for all Reboot-ers:

Since so much about our sabbaticals are to plan what comes after, or to refresh our views of life, priorities, and constant change, I thought this community would enjoy the Pema Chodron quote I just saw…

“Each person’s life is like a mandala – a vast, limitless circle. We stand in the center of our own circle, and everything we see, hear and think forms the mandala of our life. We enter a room, and the room is our mandala. We get on the subway, and the subway car is our mandala, down to the teenager checking messages on her iPhone and the homeless man slumped in the corner. We go for a hike in the mountains, and everything as far as we can see is our mandala: the clouds, the trees, the snow on the peeks, even the rattlesnake coiled in the corner. We’re lying in a hospital bed, and the hospital is our mandala. We don’t set it up, we don’t get to choose what or who shows up in it. It is, as Chogyam Trungpa said, “the mandala that is never arranged but is always complete.” And we embrace it just as it is.

Everything that shows up in your mandala is a vehicle for your awakening. From this point of view, awakening is right at your fingertips continually. There’s not a drop of rain or a pile of dog poop that appears in your life that isn’t the manifestation of enlightened energy, that isn’t a doorway to sacred world. But it’s up to you whether your life is a mandala of neurosis or a mandala of sanity.”

Helping A Small Business Owner Reboot!

In a new article from Business on Main, a community for small-business leaders, independent journalist and communication consultant Toddi Gutner describes how she knew she needed a break from running her small business:

“I was having trouble coming up with ideas for my columns and motivating myself to work on assigned client projects, and in general feeling less engaged in my work.”

She realized that the solution would be to take a sabbatical.  She found our Reboot Your Life book, and then took one of our Reboot Your Life Retreats and found the simple steps she needed to take so she could “recapture the passion” she gets from her work.
